Angiotensin II type-1 receptor antagonist as well as angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor attenuates the development of heart failure in aortocaval fistula rats: OBJECTIVES: We investigated the effect of chronic administration of an angiotensin II type-1 receptor antagonist in the development of heart failure due to volume overload in rats. METHODS: Aortocaval fistula (AVF), a model of volume overloaded he...

Pattern of self-organization in tumour systems Complex growth dynamics in a novel brain tumour spheroid model: We propose that a highly malignant brain tumour is an opportunistic, self-organizing and adaptive complex dynamic biosystem rather than an unorganized cell mass. To test the hypothesis of related key behaviour such as cell proliferation and invasi...

A high frequency of apolipoprotein E4 isoprotein in Japanese patients with late-onset nonfamilial Alzheimer's disease: Phenotypes of apolipoprotein E (apo E) were determined by the iso-electric focusing method in 42 Japanese patients with nonfamilial late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 96 age-matched controls without hyperlipidemia and/or diabetes. There was a...

The status of bat roosts in caves in the south west of Western Australia, with a focus on Quininup Lake Cave: Caves suitable for bat habitation are relatively uncommon in the south west of Western Australia. We made regular observations of one of the largest known colonies of bats (Chalinolobus morio, Vespertilionidae) in Quininup Lake Cave near Cowaramup...

Hair cell development in vivo and in vitro Analysis by using a monoclonal antibody specific to hair cells in the chick inner ear: The purpose of this study was to establish a hair cell-specific marker and a convenient explant culture system for developing chick otocysts to facilitate in vivo and in vitro studies focusing on hair cell genesis in the inner ear. To achieve this...

Floating culture: A method for the investigation of bud burst characteristics of grapevine buds: Conventional methods for a quick determination of the bud burst ability of grapevine buds are inaccurate. Looking for a more accurate method, which might allow more reliable prognoses of possibly damaged buds, cuttings were forced in water. By mea...

RhoA and zeta PKC control distinct modalities of LFA-1 activation by chemokines Critical role of LFA-1 affinity triggering in lymphocyte in vivo homing: Chemokines regulate rapid leukocyte adhesion by triggering a complex modality of integrin activation. We show that the small GTPase RhoA and the atypical zeta PKC differently control lymphocyte LFA-1 high-affinity state and rapid lateral mobility...

Carcinogenic risk assessment of MeIQx and PhIP in a newborn mouse two-stage tumorigenesis assay: A newborn mouse two-stage tumorigenesis assay was evaluated as a possible alternative to chronic rodent carcinogenicity bioassays by investigating the carcinogenicity of two major heterocyclic amines, 2-amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo(4,5-f)quinoxaline...
