Study of the Evolution of Cultivated Peanut through Crossability Studies among Arachis ipaensis, A duranensis, and A hypogaea

, : Study of the Evolution of Cultivated Peanut through Crossability Studies among Arachis ipaensis, A duranensis, and A hypogaea. Crop science- 46(4): 1546-1552

Genus Arachis L. includes 80 described species, of which 31 belong to section Arachis, including the two diploid species A. ipaensis Krapov. and W.C. Gregory and A. duranensis Krapov. and W.C. Gregory, considered the putative B and A genome parents of the cultivated peanut. This work contributes to the study of evolution of the peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), based on the successful hybridization between A. ipaensis and A. duranensis, chromosome doubling of the hybrid, and crosses between the synthetic amphidiploid and representatives of the diversity of the crop. Diploid hybrids between A. ipaensis and A. duranensis, confirmed by molecular markers, had pollen stains of 0.98%. Colchicine-induced tetraploids were confirmed by mitotic chromosome counts. Progeny from these amphidiploid plants had a 97.74% pollen stain and significant differences among structure sizes measured in diploid and tetraploid flowers. Hybrid individuals [A. hypogaea x (A. ipaensis x A. duranensis)4x] were produced from crosses involving all six botanical varieties of A. hypogaea. These hybrids indicate the evolutionary similarity between the wild species and the cultigen. The successful hybridization between diploid species A. ipaensis and A. duranensis and between A. hypogaea and the synthetic amphidiploid support the theory that these two diploids are the parents of the cultivated peanut. Resulting materials are of great importance to peanut breeding.

On the application of Banka drill in the prospecting of lignite deposit in Chaotung Basin, N. Yunnan: The drill proved very successful. The extent of the lignite was determined, and reserves calculated at 140,000,000 tons. The lignite is of lower Pliocene age, nearly horizontal, and covered by 2 to 20 feet of overburden.

Effect of exercise prescriptions on cardiovascular responses in Chinese college students: To determine the effects of different exercise prescriptions (EP) on cardiovascular functions, 82 male (M) and 113 female (F) college students were randomly assigned into 9 EP groups (EPvelocity, EPendurance, EPstrength, EPbasketball, EPvolleyball...

Genetic influences on behavioral and neuroendocrine responses to predator-odor stress in rats: The exposure of animals to a variety of stressful events can induce behavioral and physiological responses, which can be modulated by anxiety levels. It is well recognized that genetic factors play a substantial role in both anxiety and stress re...

Myofibroblastoma of the breast: Genetic link with spindle cell lipoma: Mammary myofibroblastoma is a rare tumour, mainly occurring in male patients. This paper describes two cases of mammary myofibroblastoma, with typical histological features, including the presence of fat cells and mast cells. Immunohistochemically...

The social function of allo-marking in the European badger (Meles meles): The adaptive significance of sociality in European badgers (Meles meles) is often explained on the basis of ecological factors, but little is known about their social interactions. Here, we investigate how allo-marking of conspecifics with subcaud...

Mercury cycling in surface water, pore water and sediments of Mugu Lagoon, CA, USA: Mugu Lagoon is an estuary in southern California, listed as impaired for mercury. In 2005, we examined mercury cycling at ten sites within at most four habitats. In surface water (unfiltered and filtered) and pore water, the concentration of total...
