A comparison of the F1 and F2 of interline sunflower hybrids grown for oil

The F1s from 20 crosses made among eight lines derived from varieties of Russian, Polish and Canadian origin averaged 10.4% taller than the taller of their respective parent lines but this figure decreased to 1.7% in the F2. In earliness both generations were intermediate between parent lines. Achene yield was almost double that of the better parent in the F1 but in the F2 only two hybrids showed improvements better than 40%. Oil yield varied similarly, though with slightly higher values.
