A preliminary study of honey bee foraging range in macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia, Maiden and Betche)

An apiary containing 51 colonies of honeybees was placed at the edge of a macadamia orchard in Hawaii. Foraging bees were captured on the trees, tagged with numbered metal discs and released; those returning to the hives passed through magnetic traps which pulled the metal labels from the bees It was estimated that about 43% or more of the foragers were wild honeybees from nests in the nearby forests. Most of the apiary honeybees foraged within 1 km of the hives.P.
