Acute blastomycotic arthritis

Archives of Internal Medicine 132(5): 684-688

Acute blastomycotic arthritis

The cases of 4 of 12 patients suffering from acute blastomycotic arthritis, without evidence of adjacent osteomyelitis, are described. The other cases are reviewed and symptoms and treatment are discussed. The method of spread appeared to be haematogenous. All patients had pulmonary involvement and 11 had skin lesions. The diagnosis was established by microscopic examination of the joint fluid and confirmed by culture of Blastomyces dermatitidis.
