Analysis of variation due to genetic and environmental factors in gross milk composition in Quebec dairy cattle

Data consisting of 96 692 test-day production records of 3 dairy breeds from 492 herds in Quebec were analysed by the least squares method. Test-day yields increased and the % composition declined from 1st lactation to maturity. Lactation sequence accounted for 8-12% of the variance in yields and only 0.2% of the variance in fat and protein %. Test-day yields and % fluctuated with month of test and stage of lactation.
