Behavioural studies on queen introduction in honey bees. 4. Introduction of queen models into honey bee colonies

Behavioural studies on queen introduction in honey bees. 4. Introduction of queen models into honey bee colonies

American Bee Journal 114(5): 174-176

When 3 lures, made by rubbing small pieces of polystyrene on the dorsal surface of the abdomen (A) and/or the mouthparts (M) of a laying queen, were introduced simultaneously into a queenright colony, more workers were attracted to A+M than to either A or M. When small corks which had been dipped into ether extracts of queens were placed on the top-bars of a queenright colony kept dark for 10 min, extracts of laying queens attracted nearly twice as many workers as extracts of virgin queens.
