Biology of flowering and nectar production in pear (Pyrus communis)

Flowering and nectar production of 8 varieties were studied for 4 years in an orchard planted on alluvial soil 153 m above sea level. Flowering began when the accumulated temperature reached 140.1-197.5 deg C. Nectar was secreted day and night for 4.8-9.1 days. Nectar yield and sugar content varied considerably between the species, and values were also affected by weather conditions. Bees collected pollen from the flowers.P.
