Carbohydrate tolerance test in the horse. I. Effect of intravenous glucose administration on plasma glucose concentration and insulin level

Five horses were starved for 17-18 hours, then injected i/v with 0.5 g/kg glucose in less than 4 minutes. Blood samples were collected before the injection and 15, 30 and every succeeding 30 minutes up to 240 minutes after injection. The disappearance of glucose from the plasma was approximated to an exponential curve. Calculated clearance curve and half-life were lower than reported in some other species such as sheep and monkey.
