Chemical control of parasitic nematodes in sugar cane

When sugar cane was planted in cultivated strips 25 cm wide, with the interrows remaining untilled, the population of plant parasitic nematodes was much higher in the tilled strips than between them. An application of nematicide to the strips resulted in a yield increase of 46.8%, whereas overall treatment of a conventionally tilled area (requiring 3 times as much nematicide) gave a yield increase of 58.1%.
