Using soil-moisture records from 10 sites for 1954-70 and a stress index for maize depending on the reductions of evapotranspiration below potential evapotranspiration, the distribution of average stress indices across the State of Iowa and the probability of the occurrence of stress great enough to reduce maize yields, are presented. The relationship between grain yield and accumulated water stress for 27 June-31 Aug. could be described by 3 regression lines; one each for maize following pasture in N.E. Iowa, maize following pasture and maize following maize having different yields when no water stress occurred.
