In 3 successive years, the performance was studied of 459 crossbred and 227 purebred calves. Compared with purebred Dutch Black Pieds (DBP), gestation length averaged 1 wk longer for Charolais crossbred calves, 10 days longer for Limousin crossbreds, and 1 day longer for Meuse-Rhine-Yssel (MRY) crossbreds. The incidence of dystocia was 9.2% for Charolais crossbreds, 6.2% for Limousin crossbreds, 5.1% for MRY crossbreds and approx. 4% for DBPs.
