Comparative analysis of the osmotic components of milk

Tabulated data are presented for the conc. (milliosmol/l.) of lactose, K+ and Na+ in milk of 10 species: rabbit, rat, elephant, cow, goat, sheep, rhinoceros, guinea-pig, horse and man. Lactose concn. ranged from 57.6 milliosmol/l. in rabbits' milk to 219.1 in human milk; high lactose concn. was accompanied by low K+ and Na+. Relationships were derived between lactose and K+ and Na+ concn.
