Comparative evaluation of containers used as honey bee hives for disposable pollination units

Comparative evaluation of containers used as honey bee hives for disposable pollination units

Journal of Economic Entomology 67(2): 197-200

Four types of container were evaluated as temporary hives for package-sized units of bees (with a queen) used for short-term crop pollination. Pasteboard boxes, moulded "pulp" drums and screen wire cages were less suitable than Styrofoam containers; with bees in the latter type of disposable pollination unit (DPU) there was less absconding, lower mortality, and better colony development.
