Comparative productivity of some swede varieties and the effect of harvest date and nitrogen application on yields

The DM production of swedes cv. Doon Major, Sensation, Grandmaster and Calder grown on silt loam soil was examined at monthly intervals from Feb. to July in 1972 and '73. In 1973 the effect of applications of 35 kg N/ha was also examined. At the final harvest in July, yields of roots and roots + leaves were similar for all cultivars but were higher (6.56-7.37 and 8.22-8.94 t/ha, respectively) in 1972 than in 1973 (3.93-4.51 and 5.35-5.64 t/ha). Leaf yields were 1.23-1.66 and 1.03-1.42 t/ha in 1972 and '73, respectively, and leaf DM contents were similar for all cultivars. Maximum leaf yields were attained in Mar., then decreased progressively until June/July. Root yields increased markedly until May in both years, and in 1972 continued to increase at a slower rate until June. Total yields increased until Apr./May but did not change significantly between May and July. In 1973, applied N increased leaf yields harvested between May and July, but had no effect at earlier harvests. Applied N had little or no effect on root or total yields.
