Clinical scrapie was produced with a 10-6 dilution of scrapie brain material, but no scrapie was produced with a 10-2 dilution of scrapie cerebrospinal fluid used as inoculum. The results suggest the existence of a barrier against ready transfer of scrapie agent from those parts of the brain where it exists in relatively high concentration into the cerebrospinal fluid space.
