The criterion for evaluating the effect of floral preservatives on cut flowers is the maintenance of quality with maximum longevity (vase life) when the flowers are used by the consumer. Eleven criteria are listed for evaluation of floral preservatives and examples given of their influence in increasing vase life in carnations, enhancing bud development and maintenance of flower colour in Wedgwood iris, resistance or susceptibility to stem damage in anemone, ranunculus and bulbous iris.
