Seventeen crosses were made, involving eleven varieties of S. officinarum and ten varieties of S. spontaneum. A summation of the maternal diploid and paternal haploid chromosome numbers in S. officinarum (2n = 80) X S. spontaneum (2n=54.56 and 80) hybrids was observed.
