Dermal-epidermal interactions and the action of alleles at the agouti locus in the mouse

Dermal-epidermal interactions and the action of alleles at the agouti locus in the mouse

Developmental Biology 42(2): 203-210

In the mouse, alleles at the agouti locus determine eumelanin or phaeomelanin synthesis by the follicular melanocytes. Previous studies have identified the dermis as the site of action of these alleles. However, a recent investigation utilising the yellow (Ay) allele suggested a possible role of the epidermis in the expression of agouti locus alleles.
