Development and composition of the warty layer in Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea)

Development and composition of the warty layer in Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea)

Development and composition of the warty layer in Balsam Fir Abies balsamea: 170

A thesis describing electron microscope studies showing that the warty layer of the cell-wall developed externally to the plasma membrane after secondary-wall deposition and lignification were complete. Warts developed first in cell corners and pit cavities. The warty layer consisted largely of a lignin-like material, but the interior basal component of individual warts and some of the accompanying encrustant consisted of an amorphous carbohydrate.
