Ecological studies in the vegetation of the Sudan. 1. General features of the vegetation of Khartoum Province

Ecological studies in the vegetation of the Sudan. 1. General features of the vegetation of Khartoum Province

Vegetatio 23(3/4): 153-176

13 plant communities were distinguished. Aristida funiculata ephemeral grassland was widely distributed and formed valuable grazing for sheep and goats. Cymbopogon proximus communities were associated with water runnels or erosion pavements. Panicum turgidum perennial grassland was found on deeper alluvial deposits than the preceding; P. turgidum was an effective sand binder but was palatable and often destroyed by intensive grazing.
