Effect of ethephon on bulbing of onion under noninductive photoperiod

Several onion cvs were grown with various photoperiods, and the effects were compared of applying ethephon at various concentrations by immersing the bulbs, foliar spraying, injection into the root zone or by soil drenches. Seedlings immersed in ethephon at a concentration as low as 1.5 p.p.m. started bulbing after 7 days; ethephon at 48 p.p.m., however, was much more effective and leaf numbers/plant were reduced from 3 to 1.
