Effect of ethephon on ethylene production and bulbing in onion

Effect of ethephon on ethylene production and bulbing in onion

Israel Journal of Botany 21(2): 126

Ethephon solution (2 400 ppm) applied weekly as a leaf spray for 10 weeks caused bulb initiation in onion (cv. Southport White Globe, local selection) grown in the field under relatively short day conditions. No bulbing was observed in untreated plants. Ethephon applications suppressed vegetative growth and resulted in low levels of total solids in the bulbs. An increase in the endogenous ethylene level was found during bulb initiation under natural photoperiodic induction in untreated plants.
