Effect of ethephon on seedstalk growth and seed yield of onion

Onions, Grano, were sprayed with ethephon (240-1920 p.p.m.) in 4-, 3- or 2-weekly applications starting when at least 25, 50 or 75%, respectively, of the plants had visible seed-stalks. Applied to non-bolting plants, ethephon at 240 or 480 p.p.m. partially inhibited seed-stalk emergence and lowered the seed yield of early developing inflorescences.
