Effect of fluoride on some hematological indices and 59Fe distribution in the blood and iron-storing tissues in rats

Rats in 2 groups of 18 were given for 75 days tap water without or with 150 mu g F/g, equivalent to 3 mg F daily. Blood was taken 3 days before the end and the rats were given intraperitoneally 59Fe as citrate 16 h before anaesthesia. Intake of F caused significant decreases in blood erythrocyte count by 20%, Hb content 5%, Fe incorporation into blood 28% and into spleen 27%; Fe incorporation into liver increased by 101% and into bone marrow by 37%; haematocrit was unaffected.
