Effect of forage on performance, content of the reticulo rumen and VFA in rumen and caecum of calves fed diets based on molasses/urea

Effect of forage on performance, content of the reticulo rumen and VFA in rumen and caecum of calves fed diets based on molasses/urea

Cuban Journal of Agricultural Science 7(2): 185-190

Holstein calves of 76 kg in 3 groups of 5 were given, to appetite, final molasses with 2% urea and 500 g fish meal and minerals daily. Group A also got fresh Napier grass at 1.5% of liveweight, group B got dried ground Napier grass at 0.4% of liveweight and group C had no roughage. Average daily gain was 3 times as much in A as in B and calves of group C lost weight. There was one case of toxicity on treatments A and B but all C animals showed signs of toxicity.
