Effect of fruit thinning on some components of fruit quality in apples

, : Effect of fruit thinning on some components of fruit quality in apples. Acta Horticulturae (34): 445-448

Fruit thinning trials with apple Golden Delicious over the years 1962-1971 showed that it is possible to double the yield of large (>70 mm) fruits, to improve colour and to increase the content of soluble solids and titratable acid. Hand thinning produced better results than chemical thinning with NAAm or carbaryl. Chemical thinning increased the percentage of fruits with bitter pit, though this was followed by a compensatory decrease in the following year.
