Applied fertilizers increased the negative growth period in late-maturing potato which did not mature before the onset of frosts; this decreased starch content. In early-maturing cv., the well-developed plants on fertilized plots consumed more starch from the tubers for respiration during the drought period than did the less well-developed plants on unfertilized plots.
