Alternate wetting and drying of the sclerotia of S. oryzae (Leptosphaeria salvinii) on rice resulted in substantial loss of wt. accompanied by reduction in viability. The viabilities of sclerotia recovered from wet soils after incubation at 24 deg C were significantly lower than the viabilities of those incubated at 1 deg , and of those incubated at 24 deg after they were recovered from soils that had been allowed to dry.
