Effectiveness of nitrification inhibitors formulated with anhydrous ammonia when applied to sugarcane in Louisiana

Effectiveness of nitrification inhibitors formulated with anhydrous ammonia when applied to sugarcane in Louisiana

Proceedings of the International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists, 14th Congress 1971: 754-761

The relative effectiveness of N-Serve (2-chloro-6-(trichloromethyl)pyridine) and potassium azide (KN3) as nitrification inhibitors when formulated and applied with anhydrous NH3 was compared at 2 N levels (100 and 150 lb/acre) and 2 inhibitor levels (3% and 6% by weight). KN3 was only 25-30% as effective as N-Serve in suppressing nitrification. Fertilizer efficiency was markedly enhanced by N-Serve, resulting in cane yields that were 5-6 tons/acre higher at the lower N level.
