The main cause of intraspecific competition among larvae of Plodia interpunctella (Hb.) was found in investigations in Israel to be food shortage. Competition for food may affect the population in several ways. It may separate the timing of emergence of males and females, and reduce the chance of early males or late females finding mates in the same system. As a result, emigration might be encouraged. The body weight of the females is affected more than that of the males.
