Effects of rearing broiler strains intermingled versus separately and effects of placement time on broiler performance

Poultry Science 53(4): 1331-1334

In 2 experiments, 16 chicks of each of 4 strains were placed in each of 3 pens: pen 1 within 4 h after hatching; pen 2, 24 h after hatching; pen 3, 48 h after hatching. Each strain was also reared in separate pens. Mortality was progressively higher as more time elapsed before chicks were placed on feed and water. Little difference was found in feed utilisation efficiency for the different placement times.
