The direct fluorescent antibody technique was used to demonstrate Egtved virus in tissue sections from diseased trout and in infected cell cultures is Specific fluorescence indicating the presence of Egtved virus could be demonstrated in kidney, spleen, liver, and heart from fish with viral haemorrhagic septicaemia. In cell cultures Egtved virus was seen eight hours after infection as a granular, mainly cytoplasmic fluorescence resembling that described for vesicular stomatitis virus. Another trout pathogen, infectious pancreatic necrosis virus, was demonstrated in cell cultures by means of a similar technique. There was no cross-reaction between conjugates of the two viruses.
