In 1969 a survey of nearly 28 000 people living in Khorezm region and between 7 and 60 years old showed that 20% of them had endemic goitre. As elsewhere, children had the highest incidence of slight thyroid enlargement and with increasing age the incidence fell but the grade of severity rose. Adenomatous hyperplasia was most frequent in women.
