Enhanced growth of a polyoma transformed tumour cell in Spirometra mansonoides-infected hamsters

Enhanced growth of a polyoma transformed tumour cell in Spirometra mansonoides-infected hamsters

Proceedings of the Soiety for Experimental Biology and Medicine 143(3): 780-782

The growth of 10-, 100-, 1,000- and 10,000-cell doses of a polyoma virus transformed tumour subcutaneously injected into weanling golden hamsters 10 days after subcutaneous infection with 25 to 30 Spirometra mansonoides larvae each was investigated. Growth stimulation was observed within 4 days after infection, and enhanced tumour growth was observed with the 10- and 100-cell doses whereas at the higher doses, tumour growth was so rapid in infected animals and uninfected controls that both had palpable tumours by day 12 after implantation. Using data from the 10-cell site, the 50% tumour dose (TD50) was 5 cells in infected animals compared to 28 cells for the controls.
