Factors affecting buttressing in Triplochiton scleroxylon K. Schum



Ghana Journal of Agricultural Science 5: 13-21



Describes a study, in Ghana, of the effects of mechanical stress and effective soil depth on buttressing of T. scleroxylon, and the apparent relation between buttressing and fluting in the upper stem. Data on buttresses from 191 T. scleroxylon trees (diameter 0.48-0.61 m) were analysed with reference to direction of lean and asymmetrical crown development. Soil/buttress relations were studied on 20 trees and site/buttress relations were studied on an additional 22 trees.
