In an experiment in 1965-9, ewes were stocked at (a) 10, (b) 15 or (c) 20/ha on pasture comprising 66% Pao trivialis, 9% Holcus lanatus, 7% Lolium perenne, 5% Trifolium repens and 3% Agrostis spp. which was given 77 kg N + 30 kg P + 63 kg K/ha annually. Flock performance (weaning percentage) was similar at (a) and (b) and much lower with (c) and lamb growth rates decreased with increase in stocking rate. Ewe liveweights were 7.6 and 18.5% lower at (b) and (c), respectively, than at (a).
