The improvement in efficiency in wood cutting obtained by applying a lateral vibration to the knife was studied by means of comparative oblique cutting tests. The relations of the parallel and normal cutting forces to the angle of inclination in oblique cutting are shown graphically. The ratio of the parallel cutting force component in lateral vibratory cutting to that in conventional cutting is shown as a function of the mean effective rake angle of the vibrating knife.
