The stress distribution round the knife edge during cutting was determined approximately by use of simulations, and is shown diagrammatically. In general, the compressive and tensile stresses in the workpiece increase as the sharpness angle of the knife increases and with increasing depth of cut. The shearing stress has positive values on the part of the workpiece on the rake face and negative values on the remaining part.
