Genetic and environmental factors affecting weaning weight and weaning type score in beef cattle

Weaning records of 1363 calves from 6 Aberdeen-Angus herds, 2042 calves from 4 Hereford herds, 2840 calves from 3 Santa Gertrudis herds, and 3528 calves from 4 Brahman herds were collected during 1960-71. Analysis of weaning weight data showed that herd, year, age of dam and sex contributed 7.2, 0.9, 1.3 and 4.2% to total variation, all effects being significant. In the weaning type score analysis, herd and year effects were consistently highly significant.
