Genetic factors and hormonal stimulation affecting weight and fertility of ewe lambs

Genetic factors and hormonal stimulation affecting weight and fertility of ewe lambs

Journal of Animal Science 36(5): 828-831

179 ewe lambs from a 3-breed polyallel cross involving the Willamette, Suffolk and Hampshire Down breeds were used. Ewe birth weight, ewe weight at mating and fertility were analysed in relation to heterosis, general combining ability, maternal effect, reciprocal differences, and the effects of a hormone treatment. Treatment consisted of 3 injections of anterior pituitary extract at intervals of 2 wk beginning 7 wk before the breeding period.
