Genetic models for the analysis of the inheritance of quantitative characters in cultivated plants

The function of models in enabling interactions between heredity and environment to be defined and evaluated is described, emphasis being laid on the need to avoid neglecting maternal and competitive effects. Models which have been proposed are compared, the "metric" and "statistical" types of model being contrasted. Cockerham's factorial approach, as developed by Kempthorne, is shown to allow for interactions of nonallelic genes, and can provide a metric model with epistatic effects.
