Conidia germinated on soil sterilized by steam or propylene oxide but not on 6 different unsterilized soils. This fungistasis was removed by 0.5% peptone but glucose had no effect. Amendments of wheat straw or lignin to unsterilized soil had no effect on spore germination after sterilization. Fungistasis was restored by adding various amounts of natural soil or by lowering the soil pH, and by incubating micro-organisms in sterile soil.
