From existing data on effects of date of sowing and harvesting on yields of fodder crops, yields were calculated for silage maize preceded by catch crops of Italian ryegrass, fodder rye and fodder barley assuming that these would delay the sowing of maize. These crop combinations yielded more DM than silage maize sown on the optimum date (25 Apr.), but yields of SE were higher only where the growth period of the crop combination exceeded 12 months.
