Growing grasses undersown in cereal crops

In a series of trials in 1969-73 the effects of different rates of applied N on grasses undersown with cereals was examined. Dactylis glomerata and Bromus inermis undersown with spring barley yielded 4.4 and 4.2 t fresh matter/ha, respectively, without applied N and 9.7 and 9.5 t, respectively, with 80 kg N/ha. In a further trial an undersown stubble catch crop of D. glomerata given 0, 30, 60, 90 or 120 kg N/ha yielded 0.84, 1.35, 1.64, 1.98 and 2.42 t DM/ha, respectively.
