1. From 8 to 42 days of age 4 groups of 4 Spanish Friesian calves were given a total of 150, 175, 200 or 225 litres milk substitute and had free access to hay and a pelleted starting concentrate. Then, to 154 days they had growing concentrate, as meal, and hay to appetite. Average daily gain to 42 days was 547, 610, 630 and 583 g.
