In field trials the use of a petrol-driven portable shaker and lightweight canvas collectors resulted in a 4-fold increase in labour productivity compared to hand-picking rates. Unfavourable factors involved in the use of this type of machine are the large proportion of immature coffee cherries removed and the loss of some fruit due to inadequate collector size.
