Herbicide residues on strawberries: the effects of combinations of Dacthal and sesone

Following treatment with Dacthal [chlorthal] and 2,4-DES applied singly or in combination, strawberries were analysed for herbicide residues. Electron capture g.l.c. methods of analysis are described. Dacthal was extracted by blending the fruit with benzene. The extract was cleaned up on a silica gel column. Operating parameters are described and an average recovery of 93% was obtained from fortified samples (0.02 to 2.0ppm). Estimation of 2,4-DES residues by g.l.c. proved impracticable and 2,4-D was determined instead. The strawberries were extracted with aqueous acid, centrifuged and 2,4-D partitioned into chloroform. The methylated 2,4-D was cleaned up on an activated Florisil column prior to gas chromatography. The operating conditions for the analysis of the methyl ester of 2,4-D are given and an average recovery of 84% was obtained from fortified samples (0.1 to 2.2 ppm.) As the residues reported were well below the established tolerance (2 ppm.) the use of Dacthal and 2,4-DES in combination for the control of weeds in strawberries would be unlikely to cause residue problems in the subsequent crop.
