The amount of soil organic N mineralized during incubation at 30 deg C was increased somewhat by application of NH4 and decreased by application of rice tops or roots; the latter effect was mollified when NH4 was also applied. The amount of N mineralized from rice tops and roots under upland conditions was about 1/3 of that mineralized under submerged conditions.
