Immersion of seeds in colchicine was ineffective in inducing polyploidy; shoot-apex treatment was better, the most effective being treatment with 0.2% colchicine for 4-5 days. Compared with the diploids the tetraploids were later in development and taller, had larger pollen grains and seeds (by about 60%) but produced fewer pods in which fewer ovules were fertilized, the reduction in fertility being about 28%.
